Content Management Systems

In the past month I have been working with some customers that use Content Management Systems (CMS) from third party web hosting companies.  The allure of CMS websites is that the customer can update or add pages without the need of a web programmer.  The often unknown downside to content management websites is that many do not allow unique page titles, descriptions and META tags for each page. 

One client that uses a CMS system is Mr. John, a leading provider of portable toilet rentals in the New York tri-state area.  We are working with Mr. John to apply SEO updates to their content management system to create high SERP for terms such as bathroom trailer rentals, portable toilet rentals and temporary restroom facilities.

So, if you are using a content management system for your website your #1 priority is to know if you have control over the META tags for each page on your site.  On the Mr. John CMS platform,  their software has  provisions for META tags edits per page and we have started the process of updating all the pages for optimal SERP..

Another potential client that contacted us was www.spectragases.com which just cutover to a new content management system in June 2007 and asked us for our SEO opinion.  The sad realization was that their web hosting platform as of July 1, 2007 had all the page titles, page descriptions and keywords the SAME for all pages.  This is a big black mark against your website,

One of the very best content management systems that I have seen that functions as an ecommerce site is at www.bonitamarie-intl.com . This new client has asked us to update their web pages for the best practices in search engine optimization.   We were very pleased to see that the ecommerce platform  that they chose was fully compliant with updating all pages with unique META tags. 

The lesson here is simple.  If you are going to use a content management system (CMS) for your corporate website, make sure you have full page level control of the META tags and titles.  If not, your site will never  rank very well.  Buyer beware!

As a final note, if you are shopping CMS website vendors, make sure you check the page rankings for their customers. If they rank well then select them...if their client sites lack good organic visibility....then avoid them.
